I recently ran across this article on the "Budgets are ****" website. The author found 16 cents while she was out walking and was just as happy as if she found a $100 bill. She goes on to explain the "I'm just as happy..." exercise. The trick is to compare an expensive activity with an inexpensive one and see if you'd be just as happy doing the inexpensive one. The author offers examples such as, "I'm just as happy wearing gently used clothes as I am wearing new clothes" and "I'm just as happy eating peanut butter and jelly as I am hitting a new restaurant" (I don't know if I'd go that far!). I 'd say, "I'm just as happy drinking the free coffee at my work establishment as I am spending $5 a day for Starbucks". The point is sometimes you can achieve the same degree of happiness by spending a lot less. And use the savings to pay down your student loans!
