As a student, often banks will allow you to open free checking accounts. As a 20 year old student who pays for rent, bills, and groceries off a lump sum once a term, I have to keep track of finances long term. As a solution, I have two checking accounts. One is linked to my primary debit card and I often only put my spending money on there. The other is like a savings account but I can transfer money freely if it is a checking account. At the beginning of the month, when I pay my bills, I use my mobile app to transfer the funds. This also helps to just keep track of the money I spend. If I'm going out, I will only transfer $20, so I only spend $20.
