As a practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I was raised with the belief that the first deduction from any income was to be ones tithing. This is defined within my faith as 10% of a persons income. What I was taught, or at least what I didn't learn, was the importance of my also paying myself. This means putting money aside in a savings account.
As I have begun to practice the habit of paying myself as well as my tithing, I have had the pleasure of watching a retirement account and an emergency fund steadily grow. I'm now in a position where I feel comfortable knowing that I can cover minor emergencies and am working to prepare for major ones as well.
It doesn't take much. Build a budget and if all you can afford is ten dollars that's where you start.
