Official Rules of the Share Your Success Story Sweepstakes
With only two more weeks until graduation, I was excited to finish high school and move on to college and start a new chapter in my life by attending Washington State University. With this excitement present, my parents sat me down and told me that they were not going to be able to pay for any of my college expenses. Being the broke eighteen-year-old that I was, I needed a job and needed to figure out how I could afford college. The reality hit me hard. I was smart, but I did not receive notable scholarships, so I couldn't relax all summer until college, I had to get a real job. I ended up going to my high school counselor and informed him of my situation, thinking that I was going to have to switch to a cheaper school. Luckily he had an employer come to him and ask for a recommendation for a job opportunity as a water and sewer maintenance worker. He said to me "Honestly Jonathan, I don't see anyone I would recommend besides you." With this opportunity in front of me, I gratefully accepted the offer. I had to skip the second to last day of school in order to make it to my interview. The sacrifice was worth it since I got the job. The easy part was over, I had a lot of work to do, and having to occasionally maintain sewers, it is fair to say it was a crappy job. I worked an eight-to-five for everyday of the work week for three months. It was not the most ideal way to make money for college, but being able to sustain myself through school is all that matters in the end. And now, half way through my first semester of college without asking my parents for money, I'm glad I made the sacrifices I did to get where I am financially.
Thanks for sharing your story, Jonathan! Sounds like a literal "crappy" job, like you said, but the reward makes up for it!
Also, quick procedural note: To earn the sweeps badge and be eligible for the prize, you actually need to submit your story as a "document" through the main sweeps page (Share Your Success).
